What is Neurofeedback?

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our services, insurance, and appointments.

What is the difference between individual and family therapy?

Individual therapy focuses on one person's mental health, personal growth, and specific challenges. Family therapy involves multiple family members working together to improve communication, resolve conflicts, and strengthen relationships. We help determine which approach is best for your situation.

Do you offer play therapy for young children?

Yes! We specialize in play therapy, sandplay therapy, and expressive therapy for children. These age-appropriate techniques allow children to express emotions and work through challenges in a natural, comfortable way. Our therapists are specially trained in these child-centered approaches.

What is reunification therapy?

Reunification therapy is a specialized intervention designed to repair and rebuild parent-child relationships that have been disrupted by separation, divorce, or estrangement. It involves structured sessions to gradually restore positive interactions and communication between parent and child.

Can you help with anxiety and depression?

Absolutely. We have extensive experience treating anxiety disorders, depression, and other mood-related conditions using evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and person-centered therapy. Treatment is tailored to your specific needs and symptoms.

Do you offer couples counseling?

Yes, we provide marital and couples therapy using evidence-based approaches like Emotionally Focused Therapy. We help couples improve communication, resolve conflicts, rebuild intimacy, and strengthen their partnership. Both premarital counseling and divorce support are also available.

Which insurance plans do you accept?

We accept most major insurance plans including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, United Healthcare, Oxford, Emblem Health, and many others. Please see our insurance section below for a complete list of accepted providers. We recommend verifying your specific benefits before your first appointment.

What services are not covered by insurance?

Court-ordered forensic evaluations (custody evaluations, parenting capacity assessments) are not covered by insurance and require private pay. All other therapeutic services including therapy, psychological testing for ADHD/autism, and mental health evaluations are typically covered by insurance.

Do you offer a sliding scale or payment plans?

We strive to make our services accessible. While we accept insurance for most services, we also work with clients on payment arrangements for private pay services when needed. Please contact our office to discuss financial options and payment plans.

What is your cancellation policy?

We require 24-hour notice for cancellations or rescheduling. Late cancellations or no-shows may result in a fee. This policy ensures we can offer your appointment time to others waiting for services. Emergency situations are handled on a case-by-case basis.

How much does a session cost without insurance?

Session fees vary depending on the type of service and provider. Please contact our office at (631) 265-9850 for current private pay rates. We'll provide you with detailed pricing information and discuss payment options during your initial consultation.

How long is a typical therapy session?

Standard therapy sessions are 45-50 minutes. Initial intake sessions may be longer (60-90 minutes) to allow for comprehensive assessment. Extended sessions can be scheduled if needed for certain therapeutic approaches or family therapy sessions.

Do you offer evening and weekend appointments?

Yes! We understand the demands of work and school schedules. We're open 7 days a week with hours from 9am-8pm on weekdays and 9am-5pm on weekends. We offer flexible appointment times to accommodate your schedule across all our locations.

Can I see the same therapist at different locations?

Many of our therapists practice at multiple locations throughout the week. When scheduling, let us know your preferred location(s) and we'll work to accommodate your needs and ensure continuity of care with your therapist.

Do you offer telehealth or virtual sessions?

Telehealth availability may vary by therapist and service type. Please contact our office to inquire about virtual session options. Many insurance plans now cover telehealth services for therapy.

How often should I attend therapy sessions?

Session frequency is individualized based on your needs and treatment goals. Most clients start with weekly sessions, then may reduce to bi-weekly or monthly as progress is made. Your therapist will work with you to determine the optimal schedule for your situation.

What is a custody evaluation?

A custody evaluation is a comprehensive psychological assessment conducted to assist courts in making informed decisions about child custody and parenting arrangements. It includes interviews, observations, psychological testing, and collateral contacts to evaluate the best interests of the child.

How long does a psychological evaluation take?

The timeline varies by evaluation type. ADHD/learning disability assessments typically require 4-6 hours across multiple sessions. Custody evaluations are more comprehensive and may take several weeks to complete. Your evaluator will provide a specific timeline during the initial consultation.

Do you test for ADHD and autism?

Yes, we provide comprehensive psychological evaluations for ADHD, autism spectrum disorder (using ADOS-2), learning disabilities, and developmental delays. These assessments include clinical interviews, standardized testing, and detailed written reports with recommendations.

Will I receive a written report?

Yes, all evaluations include a comprehensive written report with findings, diagnoses (if applicable), and specific recommendations. Reports can be shared with schools, other healthcare providers, or attorneys with your written consent. A feedback session is scheduled to review results and recommendations.

Can evaluation results be used for school accommodations?

Absolutely. Our evaluation reports meet educational standards and can be used to support IEP (Individualized Education Program) or 504 plan requests. We provide specific recommendations for classroom accommodations and educational interventions based on assessment findings.

Are your clinicians licensed?

Yes, all our clinicians are licensed professionals including Clinical Psychologists (PsyD, PhD), Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW), and Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHC). Our team maintains active licenses, continuing education, and follows ethical guidelines established by their professional boards.

What age groups do you work with?

We provide services across the lifespan - from young children (age 3+) through adolescents, adults, couples, and families. Different clinicians specialize in different age groups to ensure age-appropriate, effective care.

Do I need a referral to make an appointment?

Most of our services do not require a referral - you can call directly to schedule. However, some insurance plans may require a referral from your primary care physician for mental health services. We recommend checking with your insurance provider about their specific requirements.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Please bring your insurance card, photo ID, a list of current medications, and any relevant medical or psychological records. Arrive 15 minutes early to complete intake paperwork. If you have specific questions or concerns you'd like to address, feel free to write them down beforehand.

Can I request a specific therapist?

Yes! You're welcome to request a specific therapist when scheduling. You can review our team member profiles to learn about their specialties and approach. We'll do our best to accommodate your preference while considering scheduling availability and insurance panel participation.

Is parking available at your locations?

Yes, all our locations offer convenient parking. Most have dedicated parking lots, and street parking is available at our urban locations. Our offices are also accessible via public transportation. Please contact the specific location if you have accessibility questions.
